The Plymouth State University women's lacrosse team took a 7-1 lead after one quarter on its way to a 15-9 victory over the University of New England in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Julia Donovan and Emily Santom each scored four times for PSU (1-0), and Olivia Croke added six points on three goals and three assists. Morgan White led UNE (1-1) with three goals, and Sydney Balotin added two goals and two assists.
The Panthers went ahead early as a free-position goal by Santom, and two by Donovan gave the hosts a 3-0 lead 1:18 into the game. Kelsey Hartigan found Balotin less than a minute later to trim the deficit, but Plymouth State scored the final four goals of the period to assume control.
UNE could not recover from the opening quarter, though scoring was even the rest of the way. Kimmy Staniar made a free-position goal to start the second, and the Nor'easters outscored the Panthers in the period, 3-2. Abby McHallam and White scored to bring UNE back within four (8-4) just before the half, but PSU struck in the waning seconds halt any momentum.
After halftime, goals by Croke and Maddie Hunt extended the Plymouth State lead to 11-4. The Nor'easters again closed the gap to four (11-7) with 1:05 left in the third on goals by Hartigan, Balotin, and Barrie Guertin. Balotin assisted on the other two scores. Croke put in a free-position goal in the final minute of the quarter.
The Panthers outscored UNE 3-2 in the fourth. White scored two unassisted goals for the Nor'easters in the final quarter.
Margie Black made nine saves to earn the victory in net for the Panthers. Maria Turriza also had nine saves in the loss.
