University of New England Sits Down Maine Maritime 16-13

The University of New England men's lacrosse team used a 6-1 stretch to start the second half as it pulled away for a 16-13 victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday evening.

The win marked the fourth-consecutive for the Nor'easters who improve to 5-3 on the year.

UNE got off to a quick start as goals by Colin Watt, Ryan Hazard, and Shea Fogarty put the visitors in front 3-0 at the 11:12 mark of the first quarter. Jacob Hintermaier put the Mariners (2-2) on the board with 10:21 to go in the period. Sam McGregor and Watt scored 35 seconds apart to extend the Nor'easter lead to 5-1 midway through the frame.

Five different Mariners scored as part of a 5-0 run spanning the end of the first and into the 10:09 mark of the second quarter to put Maine Maritime ahead at 6-5. Brendan Reddington had three assists and a goal during the stretch. Neither team could gain control before the half as the final minutes featured three ties and three lead changes as UNE led 9-8 at the break.

The Nor'easters began to pull away with a 3-1 third quarter. Jordan White connected with McGregor to start the period. After a goal by Reddington, Fogarty scored twice for UNE, including one man-up goal to extend the advantage to 12-9 after three.

UNE took its largest lead of the day at 15-9 with 9:35 to play after scoring the first three goals of the fourth. Nikolai Markovich, Fogarty, and Collin Jackson each provided goals. The Mariners would not go away through, scoring the next three to close the gap to 15-12 with just 3:52 to play. White provided the last UNE goal. Sam Nichol added a late man-up goal for MMA.

The Nor'easters had 60 shots to just 29 for the Mariners on the day. Alex Thoms made 12 saves in the victory. Zach McCarthy had 17 stops for Maine Maritime.

Fogarty led the Nor'easters with five goals to go with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. White scored twice and dished out three assists. Watt and McGregor also had multi-goal games. Chris Gottlieb picked up four ground balls and had three caused turnovers.

Nichol (4g) and Reddington (2g, 3a) provided the offense for the Mariners.
